I LIKE TO FLAUNT MY SHAPE

Nollywood/Ghollywood actress talked about the challnges she faces as an actress, her relationship and style in an interview with punch.Read excerpts from the interview below:
Challenges:Sometimes, it is related with my colour. The fact that I am of a mixed race makes people think that I receive preferential treatment. That is a huge misconception. There are times my colour is a disadvantage and I cannot get certain roles. They would rather give the role to a dark-skinned actor especially if both parents are dark in the movie.Sometimes, the fair-complexioned actors are cast in the roles of husband snatchers and other bad characters.People don’t know that we go through a lot.It has been very challenging to get a role that can elevate my talent.
The real Juliet Ibrahim:I am just a very simple person.I am hardworking, a businesswoman and a motherof a three-year-old son. I do charity work too. I released two of my singles this year.Relationship:I am married to a Ghanaian, who is a quarter-caste. His mother is half Lebanese and half Ghanaian. We met several years ago when he was living in the United States of America. I was attracted to his personality and intelligence. We kept in touch and got married three years ago when he relocated to Ghana.
Style:I used to wear anything and walk around with my flip flops. Now, I am conscious of the fact that style matters and anything I do as a celebrity is a part of me.I always have to look my best always. Style, for me, is wearing what I am comfortable in.I try my best to always play with my shape and make sure my figure comes out. I can try any kind of dress. I am very dramatic with my dressing.

What A Director Did To Me At A Location

Laitan Ogungbile, otherwise known as Suga, is a fast-rising yoruba actress and in this interview with theNigerian Tribune, Shespeaks with Stephen Gbadamosi about her rising career.Read excerpts from the interview below:It is believed that in the Nigerian movie industry, when you are out on location, many things happen like exchange of sex for roles. How would you react to this?To me, it’s not a do-or-die affair. If anybody believes he has to sleep with you before giving you a role, you have the right to accept or reject such offer. I have gone through manyexperiences but I have never experienced such. If I like you, fine, I can date you.You talked about going through many experiences, how did you handle such situations?Like the one that happened a long time ago, though it was an English-speaking movie, I met with the woman who was to act as my mother while Kola Oyewo was to be my father. At the last stage of the movie, people really appreciated me for the way I interpreted the role, they were so excited about my talent but suddenly, the director of the movie came and demanded for sex. I cried and called Uncle Muyiwa Ademola, he told me to be calm and prayerful. I told Ayo Adesanya and Sunny Alli too. Initially, I thought it was a joke because we had almost concluded the movie and in fact, the costumier had called me to come for the last costume of the last set, but to my astonishment, the director was very resolute about his devilish plans and insisted that if couldn’t sleep with him, I should go home. How much will you take if you are asked to go naked in a movie? That thought has never crossed my mind for aday. The truth is that no matter the price, I cannever do such. I can never expose myself because of money. That’s outrageous. I am not desperate. Why can’t you do it?I’m from a well-cultured home where such an act is highly condemnable.

Real reason Nollywood stars’ marriages collapse

For star actress, Jennifer Eliogu, music is a mission to be accomplished. But unlike most of her colleagues who dabbled into music without making headway, she has made success of her musical career with fans massively accepting her kind of music. In an exclusive interview with The Entertainer, the mother of two maintained that her marriage is still intact. She also revealed why it took her so long to embrace the microphone. Excerpts:Why did you refuse to honour the invitation to perform at NAFCA Awards in America? It’s due to logistic problem. I had a lot of things to do then and I had to do a scale of preference. The first edition of NAFCA Awards was in 2011, which I attended and it was beautiful. But this year, I had some other things to do, which are more important. NAFCA would have been great to attend and perform, but then I had this performance and I had picked a date that I wouldn’t want to miss. That’s just the truth; I couldn’t be in two places at the same time. What motivated you into acting, MC, and now music?
I have been around for quite sometime. I started acting a couple of years after my secondary school, 17 years along the line it’s not been easy but I can tell you that because I enjoy what I am doing, it’s not too much of a trouble. When you have passion for what you are doing, it just drives you to be excellent.I love entertainment, I love singing and dancing. When you love what you are doing, you wouldn’t notice how much time has gone. What is the secret behind all these achievements?
I cannot say I made it on my own, that’s the truth. It’s not me but God. Truthfully, the songsI am singing now are songs that I wrote as far back as 1995,1998 and 2000. It’s not that I just started singing; a lot of my colleagues knew that I had this music in me. I just don’t know how it took me so long to bring it out. So, all this noise about me is mere distraction, I wouldn’t say it doesn’t rock me because I am human. But you see, this is the life I have chosen to live and with the help of God and myfamily, I’ll get through it.What is your greatest achievement?
I don’t have greatest achievement yet, but I have great accomplishment. Going into movies was one of them because I went into movies the time it wasn’t considered a profession. I just developed love for acting and I had things inside me saying ‘yes, you can do it’. I can tell you that I am one of the actresses in Nollywood that can beat their chests and say they have not slept with anyone to get roles. Yes, I can beat my chest and say that because I audition in front of 1000, 2000 people and I get roles by merit not with preference. So, that’s an accomplishmentfor me.How do you define success?
To me, success is when you are able to put in your best in whatever you do; and you know that whosoever is at the receiving end is pleased with your service, and you can put a smile on the face of the end user, then you are doing a great job because it is not for you to speak for yourself, but for people to speak of you.Did your parents discourage you when you wanted to go into movies?
Yes, my father precisely. I have a strict father. Iwas born and bred in Lagos. I was the fourth child of a family of seven, my father is a typicalIgbo man, a titled chief and my mum is on the soft side, and she kept saying, ‘are you sure this is what you want, have you prayed over it?
I don’t want to discourage you but I am scared’. And I kept telling her that she shouldn’t worry, that I wouldn’t disappoint herand thank God for today. I don’t seek advice from outsiders, I only listen to my family members because they are the ones who haveadded value to my life; outsiders either confuse or discourage you.
What was your childhood experience, were you born with a silver spoon?
Silver spoon, I think is a relative word. We might not be all those names you read in the papers, but I grew up comfortably. I had everything I needed as a child. I was in the choir in the Anglican church, and we used to sing at home together – my sister, my mum and me. I grew up loving music, my dad loved highlife; my mum loved music too, so I grew up in the choir. What was your early dream?
I love lawyers the fact that they speak big grammar. I told my father I was going to be a lawyer, but along the line destiny called and I answered. What were the challenges you faced when youwere coming into Nollywood?
I didn’t face any challenges because I didn’t plan to go into Nollywood. I went to visit a friend of mine who got a role in a movie and she said I should accompany her to an audition. I went and I saw people being auditioned and later when they finished, I wentto the producer and told him: ‘I know the audition is finished, but can you please just audition me?
I want to know what it feels like’ and he said ‘okay, come tomorrow’. I went the following day; he auditioned me and was impressed. He then told me to come again the next day and I got a role.Which of your movies was very challenging?
Believe me, I am yet to see the most challenging of them all.How do you balance work and home?Like I said, it’s challenging but you trust God and do your best. l simply let God take control.A lot of people believe Nollywood marriages don’t last, what do you think are the causes of most crashed marriages in the industry?
It is not about Nollywood, but the devil working in and breaking homes. There is something about Nollywood women and challenges. Most challenges we face in Nollywood, most people outside the industry don’t see them, why?
Because most men marry actresses not out of love but infatuation. I believe most actresses get married believing that they have found true love.Who exactly is Jennifer Eliogu?I am easy going. I might not be very religious, but I am spiritual. I love things of God and I have a personal relationship with my God.What has fame denied you?A lot, fame doesn’t allow you to do what normal people do. People expect you to do something different, you don’t eat just in any place, you don’t laugh anyhow, but I do anyway and it is frustrating. What is the craziest thing a fan has done to you?
I had this crazy fan, he would call me with an unknown number and say ‘Jennifer, I love the top you put on today’ and I didn’t know who hewas. He would say ‘Jennifer, you look like a take-away’. He was scary because sometimesat night he would call and text me. So, I had to talk about it in the newspapers that someone was doing this to me. There was also this woman I met at a children’s birthday party thatI attended with my kids. She saw me and then jumped at me and she was bigger than me. You need to see the way both of us landed on the ground. My phone broke and I was upset, but you know, I can only express that anger to myself. These are some of the things we face for being movie stars. How do you handle your male fan?
It’s okay to be admired, if you are a woman and you are not admired then there is a problem with you. When men admire you it makes you believe in yourself, and it’s always good to know that they admire you, not just foryour physical attributes but the total package. What is your advice for those that look up to you as a role model?
I keep telling people, find out about yourself before you want to be like someone. It’s okay if you want to be like me but I don’t know what God has for you, and that is for you to find out. I can tell you that 90% of young girls coming into the movies today are coming in for the show, they are not coming for the love of the profession, they just want exposure. What is your dislike about Nollywood?
First, there is something going on which I don’t like. We need to build Nollywood as a family, there are a lot of people fighting to be recognized, and I don’t think it’s proper. We started as a family; we would be greater if we continue as a family. How do you compensate your family for the time you’re not there for them?
You know, you don’t shoot movies all the time;it is a profession that comes every now and then. So, when I am on location, I am on location and I am not on location forever. I have a lot of time for my family. If your daughter comes home and says she is pregnant by an unknown man, how would you feel?
I refuse to even think of it, because my little girl is just going to be 8-years-old, so I won’t think about that.Let’s talk about your songs, Rescue and Ifunanya; did you compose them by yourself?
Rescue is a gospel song, have you listened to it? I believe in love, and most of my songs are about love. I sing the way I feel. Someone called me from the US and said she just called to say thank you; that there is a particular song of mine she heard and it was as if I was talking to her. So, when I sing, I sing the way it comes, I write my songs myself, once I get the inspiration to write the songs, I just write.Right now, are you facing any challenges in music?
I am not facing any challenges for now. I don’t see music as a competition, for me it is a mission and I have come to accomplish this mission, to accomplish this dream. I have been relegated to the background for so long, I have come to live my dream, and there is no going back. How can you describe your type of songs?I sing my kind of song, it’s not easy for one to have a talent to write, compose and then sing. I appreciate all kinds of music, but I am on the slow side, I am doing songs that fit my personality, songs that are mature. I sing whatpeople will hear. My songs are groovy, you groove with my song, you sing along with my lyrics and you can relate with my song.Who is your role model?I have a whole lot of them. I like Onyeka Onwenu, I grew up knowing how to sing her songs, I have a lot of respect for her, and lots of them who do mature songs, songs that have strong lyrical content.Comparing music and acting, which is more challenging for you? They both have their different challenges. For movies, someone might just write a script and invite some people to interpret it. I write my songs myself but someone else can as well write for me knowing the kind of music I am into, so both have their challenges. What has life taught you?Life has taught me to work hard to get whatever I want, because what you give is what you get, there are certain things you expect that don’t come through. I take my life one step at a time, I don’t compete, I move at my pace. I have a mother that has taught me so much, a loving father, through them I have learnt a lot. What’s the response of music fans to your kind of music? It has been amazing, the acceptance is beautiful, it has made me understand that there are people out there who are hungry for good music, for love songs, for inspirational songs, they want to hear what you are saying, they want to connect with your music and I amloving it. I just ask for the wisdom to keep being creative.Who do you want to collaborate with in the music industry?I desire to work with Tuface, M.I, and Flavor. And for the females, Sasha and Weird MC, I have even told some of them jokingly.Who gave you the greatest advice? My mother. On my wedding day, she gave me an envelope with a letter. I was shocked when I got home and read it. I was touched and cried. There were a pencil, a paper and an eraser, and she said whenever I got angry I should write it down, and when I calm down I should erase it with the eraser and this way I can never see it again.

Brymo-Chocolate City Case: Brymo, Presiding Judge Absent on Hearing Day

The on-going legal battle between Olawale Ibrahim better known as Brymo and his estranged record label Chocolate City Entertainment is dragging, as the hearing booked for yesterday, December 5, at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos was adjourned till January 14, 2014.The case was reportedly suspended because the presiding judge, Justice Bubba was absent. The reason for his absence was not determined as at the time of this report. It was gathered that Brymo or his counsel was also absent, but Chocolate City’s counsel, C.O. Madubuko from L and A legal Consultants was at the court.Just like the last hearing, Brymo’s camp insists they have not been served, so they have no reason to be present in court.‘We have not been served any court letter. We are just hearing about court case around,’ Brymo’s manager Lanre had a conversation with HipHopWorldmagazine. As unlikely as that sounds, Brymo’s team are maintaining their initial stance – they were not served.According to the singer’s rep., Choc City wants the two parties to settle out of court, but indecisive about it.‘Chocolate City wants us to settle out of court and they are still going to court, where is that done?,’the rep asked rhetorically.Choc City General Manager Ibukun ‘Aibee’ Abidoye, who also spoke to us on the phone, refused to comment on the matter, but referred us to the label’s lawyer.Choc City is suing Brymo for a bridge of contract after the singer abruptly ended his business affiliation with the Audu Maikori-ledlabel. Rapper Jesse Jagz also left the label under controversial conditions, despite the fact that his brother Jude ‘M.I’ Abaga is one ofthe label’s execs.Choc City had moved for Brymo’s latest and third album,Merchants, Dealers & Slaves, to be stopped from release, but that restraining proposal apparently didn’t stand. The singer continues to appeal to his fans, via social media, to go and purchase the album – onlineand on the street.

My Alleged Sex Tape Turned Into A Blessing For Me- Chidinma

Here is what the MTN Project fame winner said about her alleged sex tape and how it made her more famous.I woke up one morning and I was greeted on the internet with ‘Chidinma and sex tape’. I was worried primarily because of my mother. I didn’t let her see the video but I had to show her the photos. I didn’t want to go out that day. I couldn’t go out. But my mum felt otherwise. She told me to ignore the mischief makers. I almost took some actions but I thought against it. I metSound Sultan on a set. He told me, ‘Babe, you are now a star. I welcome you officiallyinto the industry.’ I trended for three days. Even people who didn’t know me got to know me. My fan base grew. And then, I was happy because more than 90 per cent of the public didn’t believe I was the one inthat video. There were people who didn’t need to see the video to believe I couldn’t have done such thing. I am just grateful to everyone who didn’t believe the story. My twitter account was hacked and the people created another account. They kept releasing nasty pictures and they were even responding to the tweets as if I was the one doing it. I was just watching and laughing. It put me in the spotlight. I used it for good.Ever since I started, I have been scared of scandals. I didn’t want to have any. But I realised that I cannot run away from it. It is just normal. It is not everybody who is happy seeing me rise. Some people are trying to do something to stop me. But sex tape is not enough to stop me. They should bring up something else. The sex tape just took me to another level in my career. It moved me up. This is no more ‘little’ Chidinma. It didn’t bring me down in any way. I am still doing a lot of things.

As it seems, the young man has put his unruly past behind him, and has stepped up to his new position as a father and businessman.Terry G, who owns a water and poultry business, is true to himself. He admits his music and that of many other artistes lack positive message, but he exempts 2face Idibia from that class. Why is that? Amayi says Nigerian youths don’twant message. In other words, he gives them what they want (dance/party jams). And gets paid for that too. Who will blame him? But all that would change, maybe soon, as Terry G claims he’d deliver good message when the time comes. He said this during a recent interview he had with hiphopworld magazine.
WHAT WAS GROWING UP LIKE?
Growing up wasn’t easy. We stayed in a face-me-I-face-you kind of house, always going to church because my mum was a deaconess and choir mistress, so I developedinterest in the choir and also playing musical instruments such as the drums and piano.
HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE NAME TERRY G?
Like they say, your name represents who you are. So it simply means ‘Turning Extremely Rhythms and Rhymes to Youths in our generation'.

AT WHAT AGE DID YOU START MUSIC?
Well, I can’t remember the age but definitely when I was tender, because of my interest in the church choir and playing instruments. At some point I also did backup vocals for FAZE of formerPlantation Boiz, I joined him during his travels and tours for shows.Did you really produce the song ‘in case you never know’for 2shortz and for Timaya? Yes, Idid. I used to produce beats and back up before I started being noticed.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC?
Back then it was R&B I did, shot a video in South Africa but the response was not what I wanted (no hype). I wanted to be number one. Sometimes, mistakes enlighten you. I made a mistake while producingFree Madnessand the hype came. The mistake brought about my style of music which is ‘Shanteshante.’

DID YOUR PARENTS SUPPORT YOU IN THE BEGINNING?
My mum was in support of my career choice but my dad was not because he wanted the best for me. He wanted me to be a pilot because back then anyone doing music was tagged a nuisance. If not for music, I would have probably been a footballer and a strong striker at that(laughs).

WHEN WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU MADE MONEY AND HOW DID YOU SPEND IT?
Like I said earlier, I played musical instruments in church and I was being paid for that (salary), also producing beats. I spent the money mainly on transportation and responsibilities as the first child.

PEOPLE CRITICIZE YOUR SOUNDS BECAUSE YOU STICK TO ONE KIND OF SOUND, WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THAT?
Criticism is allowed but one thing you have to know is just be yourself. For me, I’m good as long as my listeners can dance to my beat, then that’s it for me.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
My environment, where I grew up from. I also have this drive that I’ve not gotten to where I want to be which is being number one.
YOUR NAME POPS UP AS ONE OF THE BEST, HOW DO YOU FEEL?
I’m humbled,i keep working to retain my present position. It’s all about working hard atwhat you do.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH FANS OF THE OPPOSITE SEX?
(Laughs)I keep wondering why questions about the male fans are never asked because they are worse. You know I represent the street. For the female fans, just being cool and playful with them, that's all.
WHAT’S THE CRAZIEST THING A FAN HAS DONE TO YOU, MALE OR FEMALE?
There are so many but I remember one at a concert in the UK while I was performing, all of a sudden a female fan started playing with my ‘football’ and then they became two, three and in my head I was like ‘whaaat?.’I just ignored them so that I could finish my performance.

WHAT message ARE YOU SENDING ACROSS THROUGH YOUR MUSIC?
Well, we artistes are false prophets because we portray what we are not in terms of stage performance and personality difference. This realm of youths doesn’t want any message. They just want to dance so I make good beats and when the time for message comes, I’ll deliver.Till date, Tuface is the legend in message delivery.

WHAT MAJOR AWARDS HAVE YOU WON?The one I remember is Hip Hop World awards (now THE HEADIES) 2010 for Free Madness.

ASIDES MUSIC WHAT ELSE DO YOU DO?
I like reading at home and playing games because it gives me ideas. I’m not an adventurous person.I like being indoors

DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AS A CONTRIBUTOR TO THE AFRICAN MUSIC?
Yes, I’ll say I’m part of the civilian contributors that scattered music, chose my style and left the rest for others to choose from.

WHAT'S IN STOCK FOR TGP ENTERTAINMENT?
Currently we have two artistes ‘D money’and ‘Terry G’also a new act‘Larry lance’ofHouse of Ginjahhas being involved.

FIVE YEARS FROM NOW WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF?
Process leads to success. I have a water company, poultry, and into properties too. It’s all about spreading your tentacles into business not just music.

TELL US THREE THINGS ABOUT YOU THAT WE DON'T KNOW.
I’m calm, observant, shy, a good cook and I love babies

WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY IN LIFE?
I met life, I’m still going to leave life so don’t take it serious, be easy on yourself.

WHAT IS THE HEADIES AWARDS TO YOU?
It is the best award so far in Africa. Putting up such an event is a lot of hard work, coordination and improvement each year. So Igive it to the organizers.Kudos!

BEING NOMINATED, HOW DO YOU FEEL? I appreciate being in that category because it is my style of music. It is a privilege.

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST CONTENDER AND WHY?
For me it is Olamide because he represents the streets strongly than any other in that category.

WHAT’S FOR 2014?
Run Madvideo will be out early January. It’s going to be full of crazy, creative, dope dance.Watch out.

MANDELA ACHIEVED MORE THAN ANY MAN COULD – OBAMA

The United States president, Barrack Obama has expressed his sympathy at the loss of Nelson Mandela. In an official address minutes after Mandela’sdeath was announced, Obama said he drew inspiration from the great man’s life.‘I cannot imagine my own life without Mandela’s example,’ Obama said.Obama also acknowledged that Mandela’s achievement transcends what an ordinary man could garner.‘Mandela achieved more than what could be expected of any man’,Obama added while he read a few quotes from the late legend. The revered statesman who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of apartheid battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations. With advancing age and bouts of illness, Mandela retreated to a quiet life at his boyhood home in the nation’s Eastern Cape Province, where he said he was most at peace. He was later moved to his home in the Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, where he died.Despite rare public appearances, he held a special place in the consciousness of the nation and the world.
